Summary
An optometrist will provide primary eye care, including comprehensive vision exams, diagnosing diseases (e.g., glaucoma, diabetes-related issues), prescribing corrective lenses, and managing pre/post-operative care.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Examinations: Conducting thorough eye examinations, assessing visual fields, and measuring intraocular pressure.
Diagnosis and Treatment: Detecting eye diseases, prescribing medication, and managing or referring, chronic eye conditions.
Corrective Services: Prescribing and fitting spectacles and contact lenses based on patient lifestyle needs.
Surgical Support: Providing pre- and post-operative care for procedures such as cataracts and refractive surgery.
Specialized Care: Performing diagnostic testing like OCT, slit-lampbiomicroscopy, and low vision assessments.
Patient Education: Counselling patients on eye health, hygiene, and protective measures.
Documentation: Maintaining accurate electronic medical records (EMR) for all patient encounters.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: Doctor of Optometry (OD) Degree from an accredited optometry school.
Licensure: Valid state license to practice optometry.
Experience: Previous experience in a hospital or clinical setting is often preferred.
Skills: Strong diagnostic skills, proficiency in ophthalmic equipment, and excellent communication skills
